About the Book

Catholic Schools and the Interests of the Poor

Although many researchers from various countries have written reports on the challenges facing Catholic schools in their countries, this extensive work on the preferential option for the poor in Nigeria is a pioneering effort on the issue as far as Nigerian Catholic education is concerned. The position is that Catholic education is meant for the total development of the human person, and the aim is to create awareness of the limited commitment to the preferential option in the context of Nigerian Catholic education. This book is simply a reminder that the Catholic Church has been mandated from the very beginning to make educational issues concerning the poor a preferential option, but even today this issue remains a challenge to the Catholic educational mission. Facts point to the same issue in many other countries where the problem of fees in Catholic schools still prevents the poor from attending the schools.
